CHAPTER 12.
Alexandra woke up slowly. The fire was extinguished and the room chilly, but she was warm. She turned around to see who had kept her that way: next to her, Billy was sound asleep, mouth slightly open. A brown scab had formed where Dave had hit him and there was a massive bump, but at least he was alive. She turned away with care on the couch they shared and looked at Rachel; she slept on the opposite sofa, lying on her side. Alex's heart clenched when she saw her little hand covering her face in a pristine move to protect herself. She was so tiny, yet she had seen so much. They had to get away as soon as possible.
You'll have to get out of here first, remember, she thought suddenly.
She looked by the window and took several seconds to realized she could see the sun as well as the frozen landscape. The water was gone.
But why?
She turned around once more to watch Billy. He was weakened by the shock on his head and she felt bad at the idea of waking him up, but she didn't have a choice. She shook him delicately. âBill? Billy, wake up.â
He rubbed his nose with a groan, stretching. âWhatizitagain?â
âThe Lakeâ, she answered. âHe left the house.â
âWhat?â He sat up slowly and looked throught the window, an astonished expression on his features. He doesn't believe it either, she thought, weirdly relieved. âWhy?â he asked. âI don't get it. You're supposed to meet the Olusco dude today, aren't you? The logical thing would be to stop you. Why does he let us out?â
âI don't know what to sayâ, she admitted. âWe'll stay inside; I'll only go out to meet Knight when he'll be there. And there's no way Rachel is even looking outside. She stays right where she is. You'll watch your backâ, she added. âDave must be lurking around.â
âYou don't sayâ, he said sarcastically, touching his forehead with a wince. âBastard.â
They heard a friction and stilled, silent. Something, or more likely someone was trying to open the door without being noticed. The handle turned slowly and the creature pushed on the leaf which didn't move.
Thank Heaven, she thought with delightful relief, I locked the door yesterday.
Whatever was on the other side of the door insisted for a moment then stopped. After what felt like an eternity, Alex heard a movement against the wall and understood immediately. It was going for the window. Her body reacted before her mind and she ran for it. She turned on the electrical shutter at the same time as a man's hand came close to the pane.
Dave.
The shutter rammed the hand of her ex-husband, who swore and tried to stop it. When he failed, he slipped underneath it with head and shoulders and pushed against it with a grunt. The shutter ground and stopped. Dave lifted his head and stared at Alex, who unwillingly took a step back upon seeing the state of him; his pupils weren't
